Strengthen your immune system with probiotics

In addition to helping you feel normal again, if you took that doctor-prescribed round of antibiotics, probiotics have been proven to boost your immune system and help protect you from getting sick. Some probiotics may even help knock out the common cold. It turns out vitamin C is not alone, after all.

In addition to many other vitamins and minerals, probiotics do indeed support immune health. New research shows that they are also able to shorten the duration of a cold and lessen its severity. Two strains, lactobacillus rhamnosus and bifidobacterium animalis have both been found to help treat upper-respiratory tract infections, for instance.

Most people, however, do not get enough probiotic and prebiotic foods in their diet to reap these amazing health benefits. Probiotic foods are fermented foods that contain probiotic bacteria – like yogurt or kombucha. Prebiotic foods support the growth of probiotic colonies and feed them. Bananas or oatmeal are an excellent choice of prebiotic food.

So, if you want to skip out on being sick this winter, it may be time to increase your probiotic and prebiotic intake.
